Retainers and When They Are Used
Many people in the last thirty years have had their teeth straightened through the use of orthodontic appliances. Our Torrance cosmetic dentist can help you understand your options for orthodontics and the best way to care for your teeth and appliances.Braces have been one of the most popular forms of orthodontics for years, due to their universal availability and relatively inexpensive cost, when compared with other forms of dental treatment.
However, braces have disadvantages, as well. They can be uncomfortable, and they require the use of retainers, small appliances which are worn in the mouth after completion of braces treatments. Retainers must be worn for a prescribed period of time after the braces come off, and many people are tempted not to use them; however, they keep the teeth from returning to their previous state.
A new type of orthodontics is now available called “Invisalign.” Invisalign is a series of clear, plastic trays specially fitted to the mouth, which push the teeth into the correct position. Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible in the mouth and far more comfortable than traditional metal braces. Best of all, Invisalign does not require the use of retainers after treatment to keep the teeth in their proper place.
Orthodontic treatments are available to treat almost every type of misalignment imaginable. Whether you choose a traditional treatment or newer technology, you can find the right method to straighten your teeth and give you back your self-confidence.
