Removing Wisdom Teeth
If you are having problems with your wisdom teeth, our Torrance dentist can provide you with safe, reliable treatment to help you overcome the common problems associated with these molars.
“Wisdom teeth” are the common name given to the last set of molars to erupt, or emerge, from your jaw. They are located in the very back of your mouth, and this placement sometimes causes problems when these teeth begin to erupt, often when you are eighteen to twenty years old. Our cosmetic dentist in Torrance can explain the treatment options available for many types of wisdom tooth problems.
The most common wisdom tooth problem is impaction. Impaction occurs when wisdom teeth do not come in perfectly aligned with the rest of your teeth. They may be angled, or even sideways, causing pressure on the rest of your teeth and eventually leading to infections and tooth misalignment.
Wisdom teeth may also come in properly, but have other problems, such as deep-rooted cavities caused by staying under the gumline too long. They may require a root canal treatment, which is a deep drilling and cleaning of the root, or center, of the tooth.
Like other teeth, wisdom teeth are subject to tooth decay. If your wisdom teeth develop cavities, you will have to have them filled and treated just as you would with other teeth. Because they are so far back in the mouth, this can require special techniques. Dental fillings are often easy procedures, but with wisdom teeth, they can be a bit more complicated.
Fillings for wisdom teeth may be inlays and onlays. Inlays are designed to fill cavities located in the inward parts of the tooth; onlays are for the cusps, or pointed parts, of the tooth. Our dentist can work with you to find the best filling solution for your wisdom teeth.
