Preventing Gingivitis

Gum disease starts out as gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums. If you notice that your gums are bleeding, look red and feel tender, you may have gingivitis. A visit to the dentist for an evaluation will tell you if this is the case.

Gingivitis occurs as a result of not effectively removing plaque from the teeth. If you skip brushing your teeth or do not brush for at least two minutes twice a day, you will be allowing plaque to form on your teeth. Plaque will turn into tartar, which cannot be removed with brushing and must be handled by a dentist. If tartar is also allowed to build on the teeth, you will soon have an infection in your gums, which is periodontal disease.

Regular brushing and flossing will help to clean away plaque before it can create problems with your gums. You should also see your dentist at least once or twice a year for professional cleanings. If you eat a healthy diet and avoid sweets containing a good deal of sugar, you will be helping your gums. If you can avoid smoking and chewing tobacco, that would also help in preventing gingivitis.

Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, can increase a person’s risk of developing gum disease. If you have any medical conditions that would make you a prime candidate for gum disease, make certain to see your dentist twice yearly for checkups and cleanings.

Gingivitis can be prevented, and good oral hygiene will help.
