Stress can have many negative consequences on a person's life, but it is not a well-known fact that stress can even negatively impact oral health. There are certain habits that can develop as a result of stress, and these habits will not bode well for the health of teeth and gums.1. Dry Mouth. The condition of dry mouth can be caused by certain medications, but it also happens due to stress. With dry mouth, there will be a decrease of saliva flow, resulting in a buildup of more plaque and bacteria as the saliva will not be there to wash it away.
2. Burning Mouth. Stress can be responsible for a burning sensation in the mouth that can be felt through the tongue, gums, lips and palate.
3. Bruxism. Grinding of teeth can occur due to stress. A person may grind his or her teeth at night and not even be aware of doing it. Repetitive teeth grinding can damage teeth, even causing cracks.
4. Canker Sores. These painful lesions may also come about due to stress, though it is not certain exactly what causes them. Canker sores can make it very difficult to properly brush and floss until the sore resolves itself.
5. Gum Disease. Stress over long periods of time can affect the immune system, increasing the possibility for gum infections.
