Maintaining Proper Oral HygieneYour teeth are an important reflection of your health. When your teeth are healthy, it shows in how you feel about yourself and in your physical health. You have a lot of control over your oral health by simply maintaining good oral hygiene habits.

Good oral hygiene habits start with twice-daily brushing and daily flossing. Your brush should be soft-bristled to avoid damaging the enamel on your teeth, and it should be replaced every three months to maximize effectiveness. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to concentrate on the areas where plaque and bacteria are most likely to accumulate. Floss gently between each set of teeth to reduce plaque build-up.

Your oral hygiene habits shouldn't stop there, though. Scrape or brush your tongue to reduce bacteria and then rinse. Continue keeping your teeth healthy by using an anti-microbial mouth rinse if you are concerned about gum disease or a fluoridated mouth rinse if you have concerns about tooth decay.

Get the most out of your good oral hygiene habits by eating a healthy diet with few simple carbohydrates and starchy foods, avoiding sugary drinks and snacks, and quitting smoking and other tobacco products that can be harmful to your teeth and gums. Try not to chew or bite on hard candies or similar objects like pens or pencils that can crack or break your teeth.

Finally, visit our Torrance cosmetic dentist every six months. Regular dental visits are an important part of your oral hygiene routine, cleaning plaque and tartar away from areas you may not be able to easily reach. Our Torrance dentist will also check for early signs of decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems.
