Facts about Fluoridation
A number of toothpastes contain fluoride, a substance that helps prevent tooth decay by coating and protecting the teeth. In parts of the United States, fluoride is also added to the drinking water. When your teeth have a protective coating, they will not be as susceptible to cavities because the fluoride makes them more resistant to bacteria.Studies have been done to see what, if any, negative effects fluoride in drinking water may have on the teeth. One side effect that has been noted is that small children exposed to fluorinated water may develop fluorosis, or staining of the teeth, which does not damage the teeth but looks unattractive.
Over the years, the bacteria that cause tooth decay have been kept under better control, but fluoridation is not having the same effect on the teeth as it once did. Still fluoride is used widely in toothpastes, mouth rinses and drinking water.
Dental sealants are a way to further protect your teeth from bacteria. With regular brushing and flossing and routine dental visits once or twice yearly, the teeth and gums can be maintained in a healthy condition. You may want to discuss with your dentist how he or she feels about fluoridation and whether it is felt that you need this substance to help your teeth. If you do not brush regularly and are lax with your dental hygiene, fluoride will probably be of benefit to you.
