Daily Brushing and Keeping Your Heart Healthy
You already know that regular brushing of your teeth and gums keeps them healthy and freshens your breath. You know the benefits of a clean mouth, and you may already know that gum disease has been linked to diseases in other parts of the body. However, did you know that not brushing your teeth may also lead to heart disease? Our Torrance dentist can work with you to develop a good, heart-healthy oral routine that will keep your teeth in good shape and benefit your heart, as well!
While this claim may seem a bit absurd at first glance, it is backed up by research. Several recent studies have found a link between poor oral health and heart disease—not just statistically, but suggesting cause and effect.
For one thing, bacteria involved in gingivitis has been shown to be detrimental to heart health. This bacteria travels through the bloodstream, and may target the heart and arteries, causing problems such as weakening of the blood vessels and heart valves.
Another link between gum disease and heart trouble is tooth loss. Tooth loss from gum disease has been shown to be more common in those with thicker arteries from heart disease. It has been proposed that, in this case, the weakening of the tooth structure is due to lack of blood flow from thicker arteries, and this cycle may begin with the bacteria causing plaque and gingivitis.
