Choosing between Braces and Invisalign Aligners
If you are considering orthodontic work, but are not sure about the difference between traditional treatments and newer technology, our Torrance cosmetic dentist wants to help you learn the facts about modern orthodontics
Traditional braces are a common choice for orthodontic treatment, for good reason—they work well and are relatively inexpensive. However, there are some disadvantages to metal braces, primarily in the wear and tear on your teeth and gums. Metal braces use metal clamps to hold the wires to your teeth, and these wires must be tightened periodically in order to pull the teeth into the proper position. This can mean discomfort, and lips and gums are sometimes cut on the metal parts of the braces. Further, many people suffer a loss of tooth enamel after the braces are removed, because it is hard to clean well around the metal clamps. Post-treatment cavities are a common complaint.
On the other hand, you have the option of Invisalign aligners, which are clear plastic trays which fit directly over your teeth and are changed every few weeks. They gradually bring your teeth into alignment without the discomfort or problems of metal braces. They can be removed for easy cleaning. Best of all, they are virtually invisible in the mouth, so you do not need to worry about the embarrassment metal braces can sometimes cause.
There are, however, cases were metal braces are more effective than Invisalign. In these cases, the dentist will recommend that metal braces be used despite the disadvantages.
