Causes of Tooth Discoloration
When it comes to tooth discoloration, there are basically three different causes: extrinsic, intrinsic and age-related. Since the treatment of tooth discoloration will depend upon the cause, it is important to visit our dentist in Torrance to find out about the options available for you.
The first and most basic cause of tooth discoloration is called extrinsic discoloration. This type occurs when the outer layer of the tooth, which is called the enamel, is stained from food, beverages or smoking.
Next is intrinsic discoloration. In this situation, the dentin, or inner structure of the tooth, develops a yellow tint or turns darker. If a mother used any type of antibiotics that contained tetracycline while she was pregnant or if the individual actually used tetracycline products when they were younger, then the patient is at risk for intrinsic discoloration. Another cause of intrinsic discoloration is exorbitant exposure to fluoride. Finally, a childhood accident that impacted one or more teeth may have caused permanent, yet undetectable, damage. At a later date, it then becomes noticeable in the form of tooth discoloration.
The third cause of tooth discoloration is age-related. This may be a build-up of damage from food, drinks or smoking that occurs over time. Also, in some instances, dentin will just turn yellow as teeth get thinner and the dentin starts to show.
Once the source of the tooth discoloration is determined, our Torrance cosmetic dentist can administer the best teeth whitening solution for each individual. Typical procedures include zoom whitening, teeth bleaching or porcelain veneers.
